Past Jobs… when I actually list it out – I’ve had a lot!! But then again, I’ve been working pretty non-stop since I was 15. There were no such things as summer breaks and spring breaks. So here goes…
- Au Pair – I was 16, summer between my sophomore and junior year of High School – I moved away for the summer to Richmond, VA where I was the Au Pair or babysitter to a girl who was 10 years old. I was paid an awesome amount of $400 a week. By the end of the summer, I had a boat load of cash… which I don’t know what I did with. However, one thing I remember buying was an old Rollei Camera that helped to begin my obsession with photography.
- Cashier at Michael’s – My first retail job. I got paid $8 an hour. Woohoo! I worked a few times during the week and every weekend – I was the fastest cashier ever. Hahaha – just kidding. I worked at an Arts and Crafts store and even though I wanted so bad to be good at arts and crafts – well, I just wasn’t. I did get fantastic gifts for friends and family during the year I worked there!
- Office Assistant at AAHE (American Association for Health Education) – I worked there after school for a year and half – working about 10 hours a week during the school year and 20 hours a week during the summer. I did boring office jobs, sending out brochures, journals, updating addresses, etc.
- Waitress -I waitressed at several places – The Euro Bistro in Herndon VA, Bistro Bistro in Reston, VA which then turned into The American Tap Room which is still in Reston VA, but I haven’t eaten there since 2002.
- Receptionist – at Ford Motor Company- I temped here for about 6 months during my freshman year of college. I basically sat there, signed for packages, distributed mail and let people into the office. I hated it.
- Event Coordinator for Special Events – this was my work study job – I helped plan events for American University. Nothing too exciting.
- Bookseller at Barnes and Noble – one of my favorite jobs! I wa around books! I stocked books, organized shelves and helped customers find books. It was a fun job for a few months. It was my second job while working as the…
- Manager for a Florist – this was my main job during college. I started working for this florist my sophomore year in college – I worked full-time while I went to school full-time. It was stressful. I worked 7 days a week, with two half days during the middle of the week and then I worked Saturdays so I could have a full 40 hours. It was a fun job most of the time but also difficult. I started off as asales person, but moved to accounting, to working in all operations such as managing delivery, orders, employees and training. I sure did learn a lot about business.
- Broadcast Planner – my first professional job in my field. This was with Gannett Co. Inc. in their Broadcast Department. I worked with 23 television stations. I did everything from managing the department and all their admin stuff, to research for the TV stations to event planning. I loved the people I worked with.
- Research Analyst – Now I do TV research full-time. I figure when people are watching TV. Other networks they are watching, reasons why they watch and keep track of the most popular tv shows on-air. I get to watch TV all day too! Hahaha, just kidding but I guess I could if I wanted.
So, I’ve had a lot of jobs… and I don’t even know if I’ve listed them all. But I sure did learn a lot. But I have been working non-stop since i was 16. I don’t think I’ve ever had more than a week and a half off to rest. Isn’t that a bit sad?
Oh well – I’m working on taking a rest soon enough!!!
great post, thanks for sharing
